The book you now hold in your hands is part of a series of stories set in the uneasy peace before a period of almost sustained conflict that reigned across Europe between 1792 and 1815. It was a time that would see men made into legends and countries tear themselves apart.

Into this maelstrom of conflict I wrote a short story, The Diabolical Plan, which was published in an anthology a few years ago. The story received a lot of praise though and I kept thinking that it would be a shame to let the characters simply fade into obscurity. The years before the war and the early conflicts of that time, lent themselves perfectly to a crew of maverick heroes that faced more unusual enemies than recorded history has documented.

This was a time of superstition. A time when the world was still being discovered and new islands and fantastic creatures were being unearthed. If you read history you will notice many references throughout the ages of seemingly impossible feats of achievement, as if something otherworldly may have happened but had never been accurately recorded for obvious reasons. This is the fringe in which the crew of the HMS Swift find themselves time and again as they fight to save their world. They encounter many strange and terrifying creatures and phenomena and their tales of heroism and sacrifice will continue, whether they are published or not.

For the history buffs among you I have tried hard to keep the stories within the actual historical timeline so the dates and many of the events are real, I leave it to you to spot the ones that are not. I do reserve the right to take a certain license and embellish some of these to better suit the story. This is fiction after all.

The HMS Swift is a Class 5 Frigate in the service of His Majesty. She runs one hundred and thirty seven feet along the lower deck and one hundred and thirteen feet at the keel, although the exact measurement included a few more inches if one was to be entirely accurate and Mister Moon, the Master, was always convinced that these extra few inches were critical to the ship's performance.

The deck stretches to thirty eight feet in width and she was ported for twenty six cannon on the main deck, though, with the extra armament on the forecastle and quarterdeck, her full compliment was closer to forty.

Outside the back porch, Daddy took Minute's hand and they stole through the tall grass, around to the back of the barn.
Then Daddy stopped, and she could just barely see him pointing to the sky in the delicate light of the moon. "Watch there for a while."
Shivering, she watched. Then there came a wave of undulating green light, high in the sky, down to the earth's surface.
"Oh!" Minute exclaimed, terrified.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
"Oh, Daddy, what is it?" She clutched his hand.
"Aurora borealis. Curtains to heaven."
"Curtains to heaven?"
"Watch."
While they watched the colors moved and changed – white, lavender, pink.
Curtains to heaven, Minute thought. What if they shove aside and there's heaven? I won't be able to stand it.
The light across the sky was so beautiful but so awesome, so vast, that she felt as if there was nowhere to hide. And yet, while she watched, the colors became more and more faint. Finally, nothing remained of them at all. The sky returned to its cavernous darkness, the stars resumed their prominence.
"The northern lights," Daddy said as they walked back toward the house. "It's unusual to see them this far south. They're caused by an electrical charge at the north pole. Wasn't it beautiful?"
"Yes." Minute's heart filled with happiness. Daddy woke her in the middle of the night when even Mother was asleep, to share this with just her. "I never saw colors like that," she said. "Not even lightning."
"I thought you seemed a bit frightened."
"Not really. I just didn't know what it was. Those northern lights."
The screen door hinges whined a plaintive tune when Daddy opened it. Minute looked at the skinny moon hung like a rag in a leafless branch, then stepped into the house....

Gamblers knew they could follow all the rules of basic strategy, utilize money management and still lose if they weren't dealt the right cards. The allure and curse of gambling was that there were no sure things. In the end it all came down to luck; gamblers prayed that Lady Luck would show up and that she would stick around for awhile.

On that particular day, Sarah perched on a chair to get a better view through her salt-stained porthole onto the dock, filled with people busying themselves with the activities necessary to supply a huge cruise ship. Port activities in Hong Kong demonstrated a model of modern efficiency. Even though the ship had been docked for under an hour, already the crew had begun to perform the necessary safety checks. At the same time operators steered forklifts, moving wooden pallets filled with provisions into the hold. Like a patient hooked up to life support, long, fat hoses attached to the side of the ship fed water and gas into tanks, providing nutrients for the upcoming voyage.

I dislike generalized travel guides written by people mining the internet who have never really been to the sites, thus in my travel guides, I do not recommend any site I have not visited myself, for I feel only by visiting the actual place, can one express to another the feel and virtues of these adventures. I not only grew up in the Southern CA region, but I also earned my Masters' Degree in CA History from the CA State University at Northridge. I have studied the history of the Southern CA area at a professional level and many of these places were places I found while doing historical research. Other sites in this book I knew of since I was a child, but they are not widely advertised. This book will provide hours of fun, off the beaten path, for those wanting to explore the Ventura, CA area. I have also included a restaurant list for Ventura and the surrounding areas with healthy food alternatives.

Born in Florence, S.C., he grew up during the civil rights struggle and successfully protested the segregation of the Florence Public Library, opening it for all residents. He is a former university professor who studied at Morehouse College, Bowdoin College, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at Berkeley, and at Harvard University with degrees in biology, dental medicine and public health epidemiology. He has pursued cell biology research at Oak Ridge National Laboratories and at the University of Helsinki. He later took the risk to pursue work in the Third World, first in Cameroon and subsequently in Hong Kong, Suriname, and Saudi Arabia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. The writer has a fervent belief that advances in science, technology, and universal educational access should be focused like a laser beam to eliminate world poverty, disease, and ignorance, as well as, solve critical problems of energy, clean water, food production, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) is shaming, embarrassing, and scary. There are so many out there, ranging in their capacity to harm, from mildly painful to outright lethal. It can be difficult to help keep them straight in your mind as you try to keep abreast of your sexual health.
Chlamydia may not be lethal, but its capacity for bodily destruction is greatly underestimated, especially for women and their capacity to have children. First, here are the basics. It's caused by a bacterium. Obviously, it's spread sexually. Of all the STDs, it's one of the more common and, thankfully, it can be cured with antibiotics. However, difficulties arise with chlamydia because it can stay hidden due to lack of symptoms in many patients. That quality contributes to its spread and its destructive capacity.

Ebola is a profoundly scary disease, so much so that many Hollywood scripts use it to instill fear in movie going audiences using it as a plot element. For the Love of Amber a black and white love story, simply right, simply worth reading.

The book has explicit violence, the murder of an innocent black man, the rape and murder of an innocent black girl, both unprosecuted, even though their killers were known by the local authorities; and the murders of four Klansmen, most of whom were mass killers and rapists, their killers only unprosecuted because their killers were not known to local authorities.

Albert's wound is one very personal, not one affecting his mobility or physical appearance. He is physically the high school football star that began the story. It is one affecting his ability to be a husband. Part of the story is his unwillingness to marry Amber, and the changes in his life due to this injury. But book's purpose is love, and love cannot be grown with violence, pity, or on sex alone. There are many tender scenes, not of explicit sex, of tenderness in a loving family and the courtship of a lovely young woman, told through her younger sister's eyes.

For the Love of Amber is the second book of the Saga series, When The Jonquils Bloom Again, the life story of Sharon and their family. Sharon is that younger sister.

The neighborhood was at the edge of Masonville's ghetto and was a mix of well-cared for homes and those sliding towards decay at various speeds. Ray's place was immaculate. His wife was too--tall, straight-backed and with every hair in place. His son was in dress pants and a pressed white shirt. As much as they looked like they were holding it together, the combination of their grief and anger was like a beacon--one that Trista was about to douse with kerosene.

Dante was already out of the car and Trista could tell, looking at him, that he wanted to comfort Claire. It was a natural desire. She was his friend's wife and he was certain Alex hadn't killed Ray. Claire Epps seemed certain that the boy had. She and Dante were at more than an impasse. For Claire, at least, they were at war.

"Get the hell off my lawn, Dante Serrano!"

"Alex had nothing to do with this--"

The man was an idiot when it came to talking with women today, Trista thought. She rounded the car and stepped between Dante and Claire just in time to catch the hard left-handed slap intended for Dante.

Trista staggered back and bumped into Dante. He grabbed her shoulders, started to move her to the side and out of harm's way. She broke his hold and flung her arms out, forcing him to stay behind her.

Claire, for the moment at least, seemed stunned into silence.

"In the car." She spoke the words in Dante's direction, her teeth grinding together to hold back the tears. Claire Epps didn't hit like a girl by any stretch of the imagination and Trista could feel a trickle of fluid down her cheek. She'd seen the diamond on Claire's wedding ring, the stone turned to the palm side, wink at her right before contact, and she hoped the fluid she could feel was sweat and not blood

Not taking her eyes off Claire, she ordered Dante back into the car a second time. "Do it now or find someone else to work the case."

Claire's gaze narrowed at that. Her mouth got hard, and a brittle, predatory smile surfaced. "I heard about you already today." She looked to her son for confirmation.

He nodded. The young man gripped his mother's shoulders as if he were trying to hold her back. She didn't seem to notice, just kept staring at Trista. "Honey, if you thought they were going to write you up in the papers again for this, you're damn right!"

He wished he could see the house clearly, but the welcoming light from the porch and the storm kept it in the shadows. Snow that now felt like sleet blew into his nose causing it to burn while the wind stung his eyes, blinding him. The high wind had whipped the drifted snow into mini-fortresses, blocking his pathway. He spied a small open area and worked his way through it to the porch steps.
To keep from falling, Derek started up the stairs, he skidded, lost his footing on the step and grabbed the railing. He stifled the curse that rose to his lips. Now if I can just get to the door. Carefully he inched his way to the porch, which protected the front door from the weather.
The dim light coming from inside the house seemed like a beacon pointing to refuge and comfort. Derek removed his glove and knocked on the beveled glass door. He tried to remain calm, but it wasn't working. It had been a long time since he had been this frustrated.
When no one answered his knock, he spied a doorbell and pressed it. He waited for what seemed like an eternity, shivering in his still-wet clothes. He needed to get inside and dry off. Maybe he should have changed clothes at George's garage, but he had been in a hurry to get to shelter, a warm bed, and some hot food. Finally, a shadowed figure approached. Slowly the front door opened, revealing a woman with long auburn hair spilling down her shoulders, her face pale in the soft light of a hurricane lamp. Because of George's age-he looked like he might be in his seventies-Derek had been expecting a short, gray-haired lady to come shuffling to the door. Boy was he wrong.
Although her floor-length green robe hid her shape, she was tall, delicate, and stunning. Her friendly smile caused something inside him to tremble.
A soft, husky voice spoke. "You must be Derek."
Her eyes roved over his damp clothes and dress boots, useless in this storm.
"George Harmon called to say I'd be coming."
"Yes, he did." She opened the door wider. "Please, come in. I'm Selena." She reached to shake his hand.
Heat met with cold. The warmth of personal contact had his hand lingering a moment too long. Speechless, he let go as if a small current of electricity passed between them. Startled by reactions flashing through him, he carefully colored his voice. "Thanks for taking me in so late."
In the hallway, the scent of flowers filled the air. Her eyes were green like a country meadow. His mouth dried.
"Come in by the fire." She walked across the living room, switching on additional lights.
"Let me leave my boots here." Derek reached down to pull off his boots with stiff fingers that would not cooperate. Finally, kicking his feet free, he dragged his shivering body over toward the flames. "Ahhh, heat," he moaned.
"Let me hang up your jacket."
Selena tried to help him get his jacket off since his hands were so stiff. All he could hear was the rasp of his zipper unlocking, then came the pop of snaps being pulled apart. The noise suggested an intimacy it was far too soon to consider………
